Exactly 30 years since the original Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer avoids is why the sheriff is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Previous Film

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the group.
