A significant industrial zone situated on the outskirts of the capital is addressing nuclear pollution following an official taskforce detected traces of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing plants within the site, that encompasses businesses that export chilled marine products.

Urgent Measures and Product Recall

This discovery has led to immediate decontamination efforts and the moving of nearby inhabitants, following a comparable contamination alert in the United States that was traced back to the Jakarta plants.

A major multinational store chain is among the companies that have recalled items from their stores after the discovery.

Probe and Detection of Contamination

The country's officials initiated an investigation after the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of chilled breaded prawns exported by an Indonesian company.

The FDA issued an warning advising distributors and sellers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, although the found level was well under the authority's intervention limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had found would not pose an immediate hazard to consumers.

The authority explained: “The main health effect of concern after extended, repeated small amount contact (for example through eating of contaminated food or water over a period) is an elevated risk of the disease, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Medical Checks

Radioactivity scans revealed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing area were affected. The official team did not identify the twenty-one additional manufacturing sites, but confirmed they would promptly receive decontamination procedures carried out by Indonesia's atomic energy agency.

A senior official stated that people residing in highly polluted areas would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, emphasizing that the safety of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.

Medical authorities additionally performed examinations on local workers and residents living close to the manufacturing estate, finding 9 individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to return home.

Cleanup and Isolation Measures
