In the brackish waters off the Germany's shoreline sits a wasteland of World War II explosives, torpedo heads and naval mines. An average of more than forty thousand creatures were residing on every meter squared of the munitions, researchers reported in their study on the finding. The adjacent region was much poorer in life, with only eight thousand organisms on every square metre.

Between 1946 and the post-war period, 1.6 million tonnes of munitions were discarded off the Germany's coast.
