Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such treatments should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
