Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined term emerged several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for doctors to attend to a minor who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of young amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, consistent with how it disavows everything it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A competition that once promoted harmony has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
