Are You Able to Solve This? That Forgotten Dutch Invention That Forged our Contemporary Globe
One can find numerous contenders to claim the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that title should go to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated around 10 lumberjacks laboring for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of processed timber might be produced within a week.”
Owing to their rapid automated cutter, which turned logs to planks using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct ships faster compared to any other nation, which unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, economic and cultural dominance in Europe and the world.
The Original Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part converted the rotary motion to up-and-down action to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed the spinning movement into a sideway’s motion advancing the log to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the wood ahead a measured step each cycle.

Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine these parts so they operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each descending motion and moving on every upward motion. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental parts.”

A “guide”, which is a tube or sleeve into which one of the bars can slide perfectly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a stand, so that the components do not fall down.)
