"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of high-profile admirers have publicly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a close unit. Their videos often feature them striding in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to form a group."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes detail departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed resilience called for a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global fan base.

Yet the sister act will always be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
